Staff: The common thread in your series is BDSM. How important is it to know these practices firsthand in order to make a novel successful?
Le tue serie hanno come filo conduttore il BDSM. Quanto è importante conoscere di persona queste pratiche per la riuscita di un romanzo?

Tiffany: No matter the subject, it’s best if the author knows what he or she is writing about. BDSM or French cooking—it doesn’t matter. You have to write from a place of authority and knowledge otherwise your ignorance will show in your book. Do you have to practice BDSM to write about it well? No. But you do have to research it and talk to people who do it. And you have to be willing to take the criticism if and when you get something wrong.

Indipendentemente dall’argomento, è bene che l’autore sappia quello che sta scrivendo. Che si tratti di BDSM o cucina francese non ha importanza. Bisogna scrivere con una certa autorità e conoscenza, altrimenti la tua ignoranza in materia trasparirà nel libro. Bisogna praticare il BDSM per scriverne bene? No. Ma bisogna fare ricerche e parlare con gente che lo pratica. E bisogna essere disposti ad accettare le critiche se, e quando, si sbaglia qualcosa. 

Staff: Is it true that your first novel, The Siren, went through many changes, like Nora’s book? Have you met a Zach, too?

E' vero che il tuo primo romanzo, The Siren, ha subito la stessa sorte del libro di Nora? Hai conosciuto anche tu uno Zach?

Tiffany: All of my books have gone through many, many revisions and edits and changes. Usually I write 200,000 words for every 100,000 words published. My editor is a very nice and kind lady, but I had an early reader who was a lot like Zach—very hard on me, very tough, and he told me to change a lot of stuff. And I did! THE SIREN went through about six complete drafts. It took that long to get it right. I write fast but I do a lot of edits. My first drafts are always horrible.
Tutti i miei libri vanno incontro a molte revisioni, modifiche e cambiamenti. Di solito di 200.000 parole che scrivo ne vengono pubblicate solo 100.000. La mia redattrice è molto gentile e simpatica, ma prima avevo un correttore di bozze molto simile a Zach… era molto duro con me, molto tosto, e mi ha detto di cambiare molte cose. E l’ho fatto! Di The Siren sono state fatte circa sei bozze. C’è voluto tutto questo tempo perché venisse bene. Scrivo in fretta ma faccio un sacco di correzioni. Le mie prime bozze sono sempre terribili. 
 
Staff: Where did you get inspiration to create your characters, both physically and psychologically?

A cosa ti sei ispirata per la creazione dei tuoi personaggi? Sia dal punto di vista fisico che psicologico.

Tiffany: Søren is based on God which is why he’s both sadistic and compassionate. Zach was very loosely based on the actor Jason Isaacs. Nora was created as Zach’s opposite—open where he was closed, happy where he was sad, sexual where he was celibate, shameless where he was guilt-ridden. Kingsley started off as a behind-the-scenes character who I thought we’d hear about but never see. I’m glad I put him on the page. He’s been so much fun to write. He’s really a scene-stealer. Grace is my Virgin Mary character which is why she got to have a very special child. Juliette came from nowhere, just my imagination, but I can see her clearly in my head. Michael was based on a boy I went to school with. Griffin was inspired by a bisexual L.A. dominant I used to flirt with online.
Søren è ispirato a Dio, per questo è allo stesso tempo sadico e caritatevole. Zach è vagamente ispirato all’attore Jason Isaacs. Ho creato Nora come l’opposto di Zach: lei aperta e lui chiuso, lei felice e lui triste, lei svergognata e lui con i sensi di colpa. Kingsley all’inizio era un personaggio nel retroscena, di cui pensavo si sarebbe parlato senza mai vederlo. Sono felice di averlo fatto entrare in scena. È stato molto divertente scrivere di lui. È davvero un rubascena. Grace è la mia Vergine Maria, per questo doveva avere un figlio molto speciale. Juliette è uscita dal nulla, è solo frutto della mia immaginazione, ma la vedo chiaramente nella mia testa. Michael è ispirato ad un ragazzo con cui andavo a scuola. Griffin è ispirato ad un dominatore bisex di Los Angeles con cui flirtavo su internet.

Staff: After the BDSM trilogy by E.L. James, books about sadomasochism have crowded the publishing industry. Your books stood out from the mass; so much so that most Italian readers think they are the best in their genre. What characteristics do you think make them so special?

Dopo la trilogia BDSM di E.L. James i libri che trattano il sadomasochismo hanno invaso il mercato letterario. I tuoi romanzi sono riusciti a emergere dal mucchio, tanto che in Italia sono considerati i migliori nel loro genere dalla maggior parte dei lettori. Qual è secondo te la caratteristica che li ha resi così speciali?

Tiffany: I’m not sure. I’m just glad my Italian readers love the books so much. A few years ago I was told that Italy would never publish the books because of the religious content, and now here you all are—my most devoted country!

Non lo so. Sono felice che i miei lettori italiani amino tanto i miei libri. Qualche anno fa mi dissero che in Italia non li avrebbero mai pubblicati a causa del loro contenuto religioso e ora eccovi qui… il paese che mi è più affezionato!

Staff: I already miss Soren, Nora and King. How do you feel about permanently leaving the series?
Mi sento già orfana di Soren, Nora e King. Cosa provi al pensiero di abbandonare definitivamente la serie?

Tiffany: I’m not permanently leaving the series. I’m already working on this year’s free Christmas story. It takes place in Rome! 

Non abbandonerò definitivamente la serie. Sto già lavorando alla storia di Natale gratis di quest’anno. Si svolge a Roma!

Staff: "Show don’t tell." Zach says it often. How important are creative writing courses to become a writer of your level? Have you ever attended one?

"Show don't tell." Zach lo ripete spesso. Per diventare una scrittrice del tuo calibro quanto sono importanti i corsi di scrittura creativa? Li hai mai frequentati?

Tiffany: Writers have to study their craft and always strive to write better, take more risks, and dig deeper. I took one creative writing course on poetry in college but none since then. But I do read books on the writing craft all the time.

Gli scrittori devono studiare la propria arte e cercare sempre di migliorare la loro scrittura, rischiare di più e scavare più a fondo. Ho partecipato ad un corso di scrittura creativa sulla poesia al college, da allora nient’altro. Ma leggo sempre libri sull’arte della scrittura.

Staff: What would you advise aspirant authors to do?

Cosa consiglieresti a chi aspira a diventare un'autrice?

Tiffany: Write a lot. Write, write, write. You only learn how to write by writing. You also should let honest and mean people read your work and when they tell you something isn’t working in your writing, listen to them. Be willing to throw your work out and start over. Be willing to edit and revise. 

Scrivete tanto. Scrivete, scrivete, scrivete. Si impara a scrivere solo scrivendo. Dovreste anche far leggere i vostri lavori a persone schiette e cattive e, quando vi dicono che qualcosa non va, dategli retta. Siate disposti a buttare il vostro lavoro e ricominciare da capo. Siate disposti a correggere e rivedere il testo.

Staff: Self-publishing is a growing reality. What do you think about indie authors?

Il self-publishing è una realtà in espansione. Cosa ne pensi degli scrittori Indie?

Tiffany: Self-publishing is simply another option for writers. Options are great. I don’t self-publish but that’s because I only want to write. All the other stuff involved in publishing doesn't’ interest me.

Il self-publishing è semplicemente un’altra alternativa per gli scrittori. È fantastico avere delle alternative. Io non mi auto-pubblico, ma questo perché voglio solo scrivere. Tutte le altre cose riguardanti la pubblicazione non mi interessano.

Staff: What are your projects for the future? Will we see again any characters from these series?

Quali sono i tuoi tuoi progetti futuri? Rivedremo mai qualche personaggio di queste serie?

Tiffany: The next three books I’m writing have nothing to do with the Original Sinners. The first is called THE BOURBON THIEF and it’s a dark Southern Gothic story about a teenage bourbon heiress in Kentucky who secretly marries the rightful heir. It’s a tale of sex and revenge and power and lust and family secrets. 

I prossimi tre libri che scriverò non c’entrano niente con Original Sinners. Il primo si chiama The Bourbon Thief (Il Ladro del Bourbon  N.d.T.) ed è una storia gotica che parla di un matrimonio tra una sposa bambina e il legittimo erede di una antica dinastia. È una storia di sesso, vendetta, potere, desiderio e segreti di famiglia.

Staff: Do you like Italy? Is there a chance we will be able to meet you in our country, maybe for a promotional tour?

Ti piace l'Italia? Esiste la possibilità di poterti incontrare nel nostro Paese, magari durante un tour promozionale?

Tiffany: I’ve never been to Italy although I would love to visit. I’m happy to go anywhere on a promotional tour as long as I’m not paying the bills. I just bought a house. No European trips for me! 

Non sono mai stata in Italia, anche se mi piacerebbe molto visitarla. Sarei felice di fare tour promozionali dovunque, basta che non paghi io il viaggio. Ho appena comprato una casa. Niente viaggi in Europa per me!

Staff: Your Italian publisher is Newton Compton. Do you like the covers they made for your books?

Ad oggi in Italia ti sta pubblicando la Newton Compton; ti piacciono le cover italiane del nostro editore?

Tiffany: I love the covers. They’re absolutely beautiful. They might be my favorite of all the covers. 

Amo le cover. Sono bellissime. Potrebbero essere le mie preferite.

Staff: As we said, Italian readers like you a lot. What would you like to say to those who already know you as an author and to those who still don’t?

Come abbiamo già detto sei molto amata da noi lettrici italiane. Cosa vuoi dire a chi ti conosce già come autrice e a chi ancora ti deve scoprire?

Tiffany: To those who read me I would say “Grazie!” To those who haven’t read me yet, I’d say “Hurry up!” 

A coloro che mi leggono direi “Grazie!”. A quelli che ancora non mi leggono, direi “Sbrigatevi!”

Staff: Tell us about Tiffany Reisz’s everyday life

Parlaci di Tiffany Reisz nella sua quotidianità.

Tiffany: My everyday life is nice and boring, the way I want it to be. I wake up about 9 and make coffee. My husband and I eat breakfast together. We go to our separate offices in the house to work. I usually cook something for dinner every night. I’m in bed by nine or ten and read until about midnight. Sometimes we manage to get to the gym but both of us have had colds the past two weeks so we’ve been lazy and sticking close to home. I like routine. I write better when my life is boring.

La mia vita quotidiana è bella e noiosa, proprio come la voglio io. Mi alzo alle nove circa e preparo il caffè. Io e mio marito facciamo colazione insieme. Ciascuno va nel suo ufficio in casa per lavorare. Di solito cucino sempre qualcosa per cena. Vado a letto entro le nove/dieci e leggo fino a mezzanotte circa. A volte riusciamo ad andare in palestra, ma entrambi abbiamo avuto il raffreddore nelle ultime due settimane, perciò siamo stati pigri e siamo restati vicino casa. Mi piacciono le routine. Scrivo meglio quando la mia vita è noiosa.
