Intervista a Amy Harmon

http://www.authoramyharmon.com/

Sei pronta? Iniziamo!
Hi Amy and thanks for the interview! You’re really loved in Italy and we’ve collected some questions we’d like to ask you. Are you ready? Let’s start!

In Italy we have had the opportunity to read just two books of yours so far, A different Blue and Making Faces. You have already charmed a lot of loyal fans who are eagerly looking forward to reading more from you. The next release will be Infinity+1. What can you tell us about this book?

Amy: Infinity + One has two of my most favorite characters ever. This is a story that takes place on a road-trip across the United States, from the east coast to the west coast. The main characters, Bonnie Rae Shelby, a famous singer, and Finn Clyde, a man who is hiding something, get thrown together by a series of strange events, and end up becoming friends . . . and something more. It is an exciting, adventure-filled tale.

In the books published in Italy, Faith, in the widest sense, is a recurrent refrain. What does it mean to you? Is it important in your life?

Amy: Faith is important to me in that I find comfort in it. I wouldn’t ever want to convert people to my way of thinking or believing, but I do hope that my faith and hope give comfort in my stories. In my own life, sometimes hope and faith and belief have been all I had in some very dark times. I always believe there is a silver lining or a purpose or a lesson to be learned in difficult things.

In your books there are quite powerful themes, like go beyond appearances and the importance of believing in ourselves. Do you think escapist literature has also an educational function? If you think so, how do you experience it? Is it a liability, a responsibility or a privilege?

Amy: My books do tend to have a central theme. Again, I don’t want to instruct my reader, I simply want to help my characters, and there has to be something that directs and forms the characters in my stories. In both Blue and Making Faces and now Infinity + One, the characters were far more than what they appeared to be on the outside. All people are. That’s what give us depth and that in turn, is what gives the characters a sense of reality that surface stories just don’t capture. I feel a responsibility to not just entertain, but to cause people to question and ponder the stories and the characters. It makes for a much richer reading (and writing) experience.

In which moment of the day do you prefer writing?

Amy: I am a mother of four children, 5 years old up to 20 yrs old, and my life is chaotic and I rarely have a minute alone. Because of this, I have had to learn to write in pieces and pockets. I can’t sit and write uninterrupted for hours on end. I rarely get ten minutes where I’m not interrupted. I cry in frustration sometimes, I’ll be honest, because it is so hard to make significant progress, but I’m proof that books are written one word at a time. I have written ten novels just like this, bit by bit. It can be done.

Among the latest book releases, which is your favourite? Do you have an author whose books you never miss?

Amy: I love Jojo Moyes. I also enjoy Susannah Kearsley and Karen Robards and Dean Koontz. I have a new favorite named Penny Reid. I don’t know if her books are in Italy yet, but she’s very smart and funny, and her books are different from any books I’ve read.
Adoro Jojo Moyes.

I’ve read you grew up in the countryside without television. What is your relationship with it now? Do you watch it often? If so, what do you like to watch?

Amy: I rarely watch television except to watch the news in the evening with my husband before we go to sleep. I love movies and going to the movie theater, but I have a hard time just sitting watching television or movies at home. I would rather read or write. I’m just not interested. I guess old habits die hard. Plus, my children hog the television.
Preferisco leggere e scrivere.

E quello femminile?
If you had to choose a male character from your books, who would you prefer? And who would you choose as your favourite female character?

Amy: I genuinely cannot choose. I love them all and worked so hard to create them. I have reasons why I like each character. I love Darcy Wilson from A Different Blue, because I would have fallen hard for him. He might be my ideal man. Musical, philosophical, smart, gentle and British. My favorite female character is probably Fern from Making Faces, but I truly couldn’t tell you for sure.
Non posso proprio scegliere. Li amo tutti e ho lavorato duramente per crearli. Ogni personaggio mi piace per un motivo. Adoro Darcy Wilson de I cento colori del blu, perché io mi sarei innamorata di lui. Potrebbe essere il mio uomo ideale. Musicista, filosofico, intelligente, gentile e inglese.

I know your niece and nephews appear in different covers of your works. Could you tell us which are these books? Is your niece a model?

Amy: My niece is on the cover of a Different Blue, the English version. She is not a model. She is just very beautiful. My nephew was on a early cover of Prom Night in Purgatory, but the cover has been redone by Amazon to more reflect the 1950s setting of the book.

Ci puoi anticipare qualcosa?
What are you working on at the moment? Can you give us some spoilers?

Amy: I wrote a book called A Candle and a Cross that takes place in Italy during WWII. It will most likely be released in the fall in the US. I hope it finds a home in Italy as well. It was a very challenging, beautiful book to research and write.
At the moment I am finishing a romantic fantasy – a book with Kings and queens and fairies and goblins—set in a magical setting. It is different from what I’ve written thus far, but I’m enjoying it so much. I will release it this coming May in the United States.

We know for sure that Italian readers will have the chance to read The Law of Moses. What can you tell us about this novel?

Amy: This novel has a touch of the mystical in it – paranornal, some call it—though it doesn’t read like a paranormal story. You’ll understand when you read it. The main character, Moses, just has a gift that is of a spiritual nature. I loved this book and hope you all love it as well.

I’ve read on Goodreads that you are writing A Candle and a Cross. Could you roughly tell us what it is about?

Amy: I mention A Candle and a Cross above. Italians should be very interested in this one, considering the setting.
Ho parlato di A Candle and a Cross più su. Agli italiani dovrebbe interessare molto, considerando l’ambientazione.

Amy Harmon
Staff:  Cosa vuoi dire alle lettrici italiane?
Do you have anything to say to you Italian readers?

Amy: I have a special fondness for Italy and Italians. My very first foreign deal was in Italy, and many of my books have now been released in other countries, but Italy took a shot on a new author, and I have always loved her for it. Maybe that’s why I wanted to write about Italy in A Candle and a Cross. I hope that book finds its way to Italian readers.
